Thanks to Bobby Benedicto from Ateneo for this info

Last October 25, 2001, the Ateneo de Manila Debate Society (ADS) won the National Debate Championship, successfully defending their title from the previous year.  The champion team (ADMU A), composed of William Panlilio (IV AB Philosophy) and Bobby Benedicto (II AB Political Science), emerged victorious after eleven grueling debates, defeating more than seventy teams from across the country.  This year’s championship, hosted by the University of Sto. Tomas (UST), was the largest national tournament in Philippine history.

ADMU A was the highest ranked team after the preliminary debates, besting teams from universities such as UST, the University of the Philippines, and dela Salle University.  All of the other teams from the Ateneo de Manila also qualified for the final rounds.  ADMU B (Fabian Mangahas and Eleanor Uy) and ADMU D (Lester Olayer and Wilfred Segovia) reached the semifinal round.  ADMU G (Jess Lopez and Camille Ng) made it to the quarterfinals.

The ADS also dominated the individual speaker awards.  Panlilio, who is also a World Quarterfinalist, was crowned Over-all Best Speaker for the second consecutive year.  Benedicto, the reigning National Champion, was named 2nd Overall Best Speaker.  Segovia and Olayer also made it the Top Ten of the tournament, placing 6th and 7th respectively.  Members of the ADS also won other accolades during the championship.  Juan Paolo Fajardo (II AB Economics) was named the 2nd Best Public Speaker in the Philippines.  James Bitanga (2000 BS Management of Communications Technology) was named Best Adjudicator.
